What shifts do officers work?
Officers work four - 10 hour shifts. Patrol assignments are done through a shift pick, which is based on seniority. Selected shifts are for one full year.
Is specialty pay or shift differential pay given?
Specialty pay - Field Training Officers receive 5%. Shift differential pay is allotted for officers who work other than daytime shifts, an additional $.30, $.40, or $.50 per hour depending on when shift ends. Certified Spanish translators can earn up to 5%.
If I am a certified peace officer in another state, do I need to attend the academy?
No, if you pass the AZPOST Waiver Test you do not have to attend the Academy.
Is the academy a live-in academy?
No, the academy is a 18-week academy located in Phoenix in which you report to Monday through Friday.
Does the Chandler Police Department hire Reserve Officers?
Reserve officers are generally retired officers or officers who have resigned from our agency. The Chandler Police Department does not actively hire Reserve Officers.
Must I complete an application in order to test?
Testing is conducted on a walk-in basis on the designated testing dates. Applications are not required prior to the written test. The first step of the process is the written examination.
What does the written exam consist of and how can I prepare?
The written exam consists of common sense, grammar, spelling, and report writing sections.
What score do I need to pass the written exam?
To pass the written exam, one must receive a score of 70% or better.
How long does the entire testing process take?
The testing process is lengthy and will take a minimum of 3 months to complete.
How old do I have to be to take the written exam?
Applicants must be 21 years of age at the time of the written exam.
Is there an age maximum to be a police officer?
